Fortrose - tree of life

Knitter: this gansey was knitted by the donor’s aunt, who lived in Fortrose

Colour: dark navy

Pattern: all over body pattern; tree of life, separated by moss stitch rib columns. The tree of life pattern pattern is centred at the back, and the rib pattern at the front, and the sides.

Welt: 7 cm, 2.75 inches knit 2, purl 2 rib

Chest: 73.5 cm, 29 inches

Gusset: no obvious gusset - underarm is shaped over about 26 rows following tree pattern.

Shoulders: shoulder strap, knitted from sleeve edge to neck has two trees; six-button opening (one button missing) on one shoulder from sleeve edge to neck

Sleeves: plain stocking stitch with rib pattern continuing down underside of sleeve to cuff; cuff knit 2, purl 2 rib, 9 cm, 3.5 inches.  Total sleeve length 51 cm, 20 inches.

Neck: crew neck 3 cm, 1.25 inches, deep in single rib.
